Member of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences is fighting as combat medic

A member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences serves as a combat medic in the 71st Jager Infantry Brigade the Ukrainian Air Assault Troops. His nickname is Scalpel

The brigade has posted the information on their Facebook page, Espreso reports.

“A mix of humanity and healthy cynicism. A combat medic cannot afford to fall into despair, be overwhelmed by emotions or panic. Blood and pain are his path in battle. The fate of the wounded depends on the medic’s velocity,” says the message of the brigade.

Before the full-scale invasion, Scalpel worked as a researcher at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Now he serves as a combat medic of the 71st Jager Infantry Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. What angered him the most in this war was that the aggressor shelled the Shevchenko University and research institutes, the heart of Ukraine’s national science and scholarly research.

The primary and daily task of a combat medic is to rescue, stabilize the condition and evacuate fellow soldiers from the hell of shelling, enemy snipers and round-the-clock surveillance by drones. His medical equipment weighs about 20 kg, which includes a special first-aid kit – “For the Doomsday”.
