International Day of Women and Girls in Science

On 11 February, the world marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The United Nations General Assembly resolution “Science, Technology and Innovation for Development” calls on countries worldwide to address gender imbalance in scientific research and to develop programs and initiatives that encourage women and girls to pursue careers in science.

Journalists from leading international media often compare the empowerment of women and girls in science and the growing visibility of female scientists’ achievements to the triumph of light over darkness.

In Ukraine, this comparison is not merely a metaphor. Today, as the enemy targets critical infrastructure and seeks to leave cities without heat and electricity, research aimed at protecting and restoring the energy sector, as well as advancing alternative energy sources and overcoming darkness – is of vital importance. Such projects are being implemented with the support of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine by research teams led by, and including, outstanding Ukrainian women scientists.

The scope of research carried out by our women scientists is remarkably broad. With the support of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, they implement both fundamental and applied research projects: analyzing climate change and its environmental impact; addressing the challenges faced by de-occupied territories and internally displaced persons; assessing the condition of degraded and war-damaged soils; and developing innovative materials and technologies, including for the aviation and space sectors – thereby strengthening the country’s scientific, technological, and security resilience.

We thank every Ukrainian woman in science for her expertise, perseverance, and invaluable contribution to strengthening our nation’s resilience. Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science!
