13-30 September 2022 the Science Summit around the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77) is held. The role and contribution of science to attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the central theme of the Summit. The objective is to develop and launch science collaborations to demonstrate global science mechanisms and activities to support the attainment of the UN SDGs, Agenda 2030 and Local2030.
Ukraine is committed to climate change and UN Agenda 2030. It is seeking international partners to help renew facilities and capabilities damaged by the war as well as to make its contribution to meeting global challenges.
Russia’s war of genocide against Ukraine is having a direct negative impact on climate change and sustainable development in energy, food security and global poverty. This negative impact will have a prolonged effect and will spread beyond the borders of Ukraine. Our country has an active program to fulfil Agenda 2030 goals internally and contribute to the global effort through Ukraine’s research and advanced technology development.
The russian federation is fighting in Ukraine against all manifestations of peaceful life. For example, the occupiers cause significant damage to research facilities in Ukraine. There are multiple examples of theft and destruction of research instruments by russian occupying forces. Now young scientists in Ukraine have been mobilized to fight the invaders. Their contribution to increasing the state’s defense capability is carried out in combat formations and scientific laboratories. After the victory over russia, Ukraine will face the challenge of reopening research labs and retaining vitally needed scientists for research programs in Ukraine and with international partners.
Despite the fact that the UN is currently under criticism, the development of cooperation between scientists is one of the opportunities for the organization to prove its effectiveness. As one of the co-founders of the UN, Ukraine has all reason to count on support of the UN member states in the scientific area during and after the end of the war.
Olga Polotska, Executive Director of the NRFU, will take part in session of the Science Summit. She will present how Ukrainian science is coping with the irrational onslaught of state-sponsored terrorism and identify areas with high potential for partnerships with other countries and international organizations to advance UN Sustainable Development Goals.
