MIT invites clinicians and corporate sponsors to submit project proposals for Spring 2023 cycle

Do you have a clinical challenge that needs a new medical device?

Since 2003, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) brings together clinicians, industry partners and MIT faculty, staff and students to prototype new medical devices that address clinical challenges brought by clinicians and industry partners. The course ‘Medical Device Design’ has resulted and papers and patents, launched long-term collaborations, fostered startups and startup founders and launched alums’ careers in industry, academia and medicine. Clinicians and other project proposers have gained valuable insights and also levered this work professionally.

Now MIT invites clinicians and corporate sponsors to submit project proposals for Spring 2023 cycle, where there is a well-defined need, but space for creative problem solving!

MIT is ready to take suggestions from clinicians and hospitals in Ukraine for medical device ideas – things needed in Ukraine right now, but which don’t exist (or current options are too expensive, etc). If selected, those clinicians could be part of the “client team” working with the MIT students.

Project selection is competitive.

The proposed project should entail a mechanical, electrical or combined challenge and fit within the constraints of a semester-long project. Past projects, listed here, have varied from surgical tools to therapeutic devices to benchtop simulators for research use.

Key Dates:

  • Proposals (1 – 2 pages) due – January 6, 2023 – Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
  • Finalists notified – January 20, 2023
  • Presentation (10 min) to students for final selection – February 8 & 13, 2023
