Russia’s full-scale war of aggression has severely damaged Ukraine’s research and technology infrastructures. Rebuilding these systems is essential for Ukraine’s recovery and long-term development in line with SDG 9 on resilient infrastructure, sustainable industrialisation and innovation. This side event of the 2026 UN STI Forum provides a unique opportunity for governments, international organisations, academia, and the private sector to share experiences, lessons learned, and best practices in restoring and modernising Ukraine’s scientific capacities. Through this dialogue, participants will explore how recovery efforts can align with SDG 9, ensuring that Ukraine’s research infrastructures become drivers of Ukraine’s modern and sustainable recovery.

Held as a side event in the margins of the STI Forum 2026 – the United Nations’ annual platform bringing together policymakers, scientists, innovators and civil society to leverage science, technology and innovation (STI) for the SDGs, the event is expected to catalyse the international dialogue and cooperation on the modernisation and resilience of Ukraine’s research and technology infrastructures. By highlighting successful initiatives such as RIFF, UNESRALE, and the International Coalition for Science, Research, and Innovation in Ukraine, the discussion aims to translate insights into actionable strategies that enhance Ukraine’s innovation capacity, foster sustainable economic growth, and ensure that science and technology become central drivers of a modern, inclusive, and resilient recovery.
